Top on my list of things I wish I had known a MONTH AGO!!!!!

Tomatillos don't self-pollinate!!!!!!!! Argh! That means that the huge flowering tomatillo plant right outside my back door, that I have been nurturing since June, watching it grow to an unbelievable size, full of promising flowers and small tomatillo-like bulbs..... won't produce any fruit! All my visions of salsa verde and tomatillo gaspacho, and many other lovely dishes are completely dashed. I wish I had known because I had more seedlings! I just didn't think that I needed to plant more than one. Urgh. I'll add that to the long list of things I have learned about gardening in the last 2 years, mostly through mistakes. I'm just crossing my fingers that the bees that visit the tomatillos every day, and throughout the day, are also visiting any other tomatillo plants in the area and that maybe I may still get some fruits. But it's not looking likely.

Quiet on the work front

My laugh of the day:

Richard Cheese's jazzy version of "Baby Got Back." Please, I urge you to check it out. I'm buying the darn thing tonight and will probably listen to it obsessively over the weekend.

As you can see, today has been very quiet. I'm actually getting a lot of work done, some of which has piled up on me. Although I'm taking more work home for the three day weekend (yay!!!!), I feel justified in taking breaks today. Although one of my kids called me out on playing a computer game in my office a little while ago. Oh well, c'est la vie.

I am happy to report that I'm now 90% better, and Shan no longer looks like death incarnate (as he did on Saturday). He's probably around 65% better. Due to illness, the weekend was an extremely quiet one. On Saturday,
elizabif and I tried out a "Zumba" class at the gym. It was entertaining. The basic gist of the class is an aerobic workout inspired by latin dance and hip hop. The place was absolutely packed, and although it was at times frustrating as we couldn't hear the instructor, who didn't give much direction anyway. It did make me want to go dancing again, and it was entertaining watching some of the older ladies in the class. There was one grandma type lady wearing a very revealing hot pick excercise top. I will probably go again for variety. It did make me work, and it wasn't as excruciating as the Abs and Body Sculpt classes, although they are definitely better workouts. After that, we ended up watching lots of movies. We watched "Once" which she brought over which was a great movie, and definitely made me appreciate the music of Glen Hansgard again. The songs are just lovely and the movie is light and a good love story, even though the two main characters never get together. Then it just happened that good movies were being shown on TV and energy was way low, hence "Notting Hill" and "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" were watched. So that was my exciting weekend. Sunday --lots of knitting and laundry, some calls were made, not a lot to report.

I can't wait for both Shan and I to be completely recovered. This illness is hanging around and very frustrating.

As far as the start to the week, I'm glad to report that it has been pretty quiet at work as well, some of my more frustrating kids are doing better, and because we were at school today and many kids stayed home, I am up to date on my paperwork, which never happens.

Heavenly Chocolate...

Yesterday I made a drink I'd been fantasizing about for 2 weeks: Giada DeLaurentis' Spicy Mocha. And boy, was it worth it. Here's the basic recipe, although I recommend looking up the official one on Food Network:
Simmer reduced fat milk with cinnamon sticks and a couple of dried red chiles (I used some chiles de arbol that I had). Once it comes to a boil, cover and let it steep off the heat for a while. Then whisk in sugar, cocoa powder, and espresso. Re-heat until the chocolatey mixture comes to a simmer, then serve topped with homemade chocolate whipped cream. Yummmmmmmmm. What a rich drink/dessert. And anyone who questions chiles and chocolate should just try it. It has just a hint of spice in the background that makes the drink interesting and enhances the chocolatey goodness. I have some in my fridge at home waiting for me tonight, and I can't wait.

2008?!

My New Year's started with me in bed feeling like crap. Unfortunately, it was not due to alcohol or merrymaking, just biology kicking me in the guts. I spent a good chunk of the day yesterday in bed, with Sammy curled up next to me, occasionally leaving to check on Shan only to come back, sigh, and lay back down on my legs. He's a good dog. I just wish I could have layed in bed without feeling horrible. Then it would have been a pretty good day. Oh well. I was actually pretty happy that SEP and I had no New Year's Eve party plans. We spent the night at home, after having a very quiet day involving going to the gym and doing laundry. After an extended Christmas, celebrating with both families, it was somehow just right to close out the rest of the world and do blissfully nothing.

Highlights from my Christmas Vacation:

Christmas with my family, including my Gram for the first time in years. My parents are waaaaaay too generous, but it was a nice day and I was happy that everyone liked their gifts.

Travelled up to Redding and visited with the P clan. SEP's younger sister brought her boyfriend for Christmas. He's waay too nice. Had fun beating up on the nephews who had just received Guitar Hero 3 for the Wii! Played 2 games with my neice of what I call the "Barbie Brainwashing Board Game" where we have to get steady boyfriends, a prom dress, and become a club president before we can become prom queen (gag!!!!!!-- worse was some of the spaces, i.e. "Snack Shop-- Pay $1 if without boyfriend"). Went bowling with the family and enjoyed beating everyone the first game despite being assigned to the "girl" lane with bumpers. Found it amusing that our eldest nephew 's voice is changing.

Saw Spamalot at the National Theater - really awesome show. Laughed through the whole thing, and really enjoyed some of the new songs.

Reading my way through the Golden Compass Trilogy - on book 2 currently.

New Year's Resolutions:

No Diet Cokes in January. (2 days done! 29 1/2 more to go-- this will be reassessed in February to decide if i will continue the ban or go to some more moderate approach)

By the time I turn 30, I want to be back to my goal weight. Along with that, my resolution to stick to a healthy diet and exercise plan.

Stay in more regular contact with friends.

Football-- yet again messing with my sleep schedule! What is it with absolutely riveting Sunday night games! Way to maintain a lead in the 2nd half! I just am crossing my fingers for the Vikings next week.

Because obviously we don’t talk enough about ourselves on our blogs.

1. I love traveling, and have as of this year traveled to 21 different countries, many of them just for a day or two, but others for a longer amount of time. The current list is: Canada, Newfoundland, Labrador, Mexico, England, France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Latvia, Poland, Estonia, Greece, Turkey, Bermuda, and the Dominican Republic.

2. Obvious fact: I drink waaaay too many Diet Cokes. The longest I've ever gone without caffeine or Diet Cokes is 3 months. I was very proud of myself but was quietly and quickly lured back to the Dark Side. There have been many days when I have drunk more than a 2-liter, and I can think of 2 days when I’ve finished a 12 pack (scary, I know).

3. I have read every book written by Jane Austen, and have watched most film versions of her works.

4. I’ve always wanted to play the guitar, however for now, even though I own an acoustic, I’m filling the need by playing Guitar Hero. I’ve beaten Guitar Hero 1 and 2, working slowly on Guitar Hero 3. ("Real guitars are for old people." - South Park)

5. My first memory is of sifting flour for bread with my grandfather.

6. I secretly admire Martha Stewart.

7. Most nights I can't fall asleep without the sound of voices. I used to listen to story tapes to go to sleep when I was young. That seems to have carried over to my adult life, unfortunately. When I really can't sleep, I put on podcasts or audiobooks (usuall Harry Potter), or sometimes a "comfort move" defined as a usually lighthearted movie that I have seen so many times I can fall asleep to: Officespace, Ocean's 11, Mallrats, and Zoolander are some of my go-tos.

I have chosen not to tag anyone because everyone I would tag has already been tagged.

First snow...I guess

Well, the first flakes of the season have fallen in Washington, DC, causing widespread panic among bad drivers and causing many delays and accidents on the roads. The weather hype machine is working full force (Storm-Watch!) and giving minute by minute updates on the "storm."
My god, it's barely a dusting!!!! And that's unfortunate, because I really was pulling for some sort of panic-reaction by the school systems in PG-- could we have an early dismissal or a delay tomorrow? That would be excellent!

On a separate note, congrats to Dave and Jasmine on B&TG last night! It was entertaining, and I'm still amused that I now know a winner of a reality TV series. That's crazy.

Weekend recap

Friday adventures coming home:
Left work at 2:15, got home at 5:00. This was supposed to be a 45 minute trip home. However, the Beltway was closed due to a bad accident, and I decided to ignore my track record and go another way home--through DC. Some things I relearned:
    1) When you want to go North, go towards Zs, not As.
    2) My sense of direction is always wrong. Without exception.
    3) Roads around RFK make no sense.
    4) Google Maps and Mapquest are many times wrong.
     5) There are always accidents in DC as well as roads that don't connect.
    6) In DC by PG county there are also 14th and 16th streets. These are not the same as the 14th and 16th streets that I wanted to be on. (BTW--why are there multiple roads with the same name in the city?!)
    7) It still was better (in a way) to drive constantly for almost three hours than to drive myself crazy by sitting in a parkinglot for 1and a half hours.

Friday night: Beowulf. It was okay. If you haven't seen it, don't let me persuade you not to see it, because SEP loved it and was giddy for the rest of the night and is planning on buying it. I want $7 of my $10 back. S asked me if I liked 300 or Beowulf better. I told him hands down 300. I could watch that 10 more times and I will never watch Beowulf again. There was something extremely disturbing about Shrek-style animation of gore and nudity, and it wasn't that good. The commercials showing Angelina Jolie's character in an animated form were extremely deceptive as most of the other actors were not animated in that way. Perhaps would be better in 3D, however be prepared. The story adaptation was good. That's all I can really say about it.

Saturday: Planned to do much more than lie on couch and watch TV movies before going out. However, the couch called me and was very nice. I did end up doing some light cleaning, but I am more stressed because I keep procrastinating the ton of work I have to do. Went out to Rosa Mexicana's in DC for Jess' birthday. Had a pomegranite margarita and a yummy chile relleno stuffed with goat cheese, spinach, and mushrooms.

Sunday: Cookie baking and football party at our house. Made several yummy christmas cookies as the Skins game was on. On the menu: hot chocolate cookies, banana crescents, browned butter spritz (got to use my cookie press! - fun once we figured it out!), and pumpkin cheesecake bites. I will have to post pictures of the hot chocolate cookies, which I think combined with the spritz cookies were the hit of the day. Skins lost, Steelers won. I was up until 12:00 then pumped up after the game, so I think I got 4 hours of sleep before coming into work. Had waaaaaaayyyy too much sugar yesterday. However, got much Christmas shopping done. I love online shopping. It is sooooooooo much easier. And Christmas lists. I definitely appreciate Christmas lists.

Beautiful sight...

The sunrise this morning is absolutely gorgeous. It distracted me as I was driving to work with it's gorgeousness.

Last night, went over to the folk's house for our weekly Gilmore Girls night. Actually had a lot more fun than normal, because it turned into a tree decorating party after dinner. One funny thing that happened was my mom and I started swing dancing to some song that came on the radio, and Watson "attacked" me...repeatedly. He is one jealous puppy!!!! The tree is gorgeous, everyone had fun, and I am looking forward to decorating my own house.

Weekend fun

Well, S and I are declaring ourselves officially home-improvement experts.
Or at least, we declare victory over replacing the garbage disposal which also turned into replacing the J-bend and pipes under our kitchen sink. The project looked relatively simple. S has done a fair bit of electrical work in the past, and although neither of us had any plumbing experience, we had done our homework and it did look pretty simple--remove old garbage disposal after unhooking electrical wires, remove part of drain, plummer's putty everything, and replace with brand new shiny garbage disposal (looked a little complicated, but nothing too bad.) Little did we know until we had the old one mostly down, that the sick bastard who previously installed the garbage disposal glued everything in. Which means the pipe that had to be replaced that connects the garbage disposal to the Jbend under the sink was glued in, and incompatible with our new awesome garbage disposal. So after a total of 4 trips to the hardware store, researching PVC pipes, and spending approximately 12 hours working on our sink (including trips and a dinner break), we WIN!! And the new garbage disposal is incredible--you can barely hear it working, and it chews up virtually anything.

Shan and I now own: 1 tub of plummer's putty, 1 tub of PVC primer, 1 tub of PVC cement, and 1 adjustable pipe wrench which could in fact be used as a deadly weapon. We chose not to buy a pipe cutter, although it would have done a better job of removing blasted PVC pipe.

Important things learned: turn off the circuit breaker, PVC pipes can not be pulled off or untwisted, they must be cut out once glued, PVC primer instantly stains anything bright purple; even buying tools and an expensive garbage disposal, we saved a couple of hundred dollars on an estimate from a professional.

It was fun getting together with cerridwynn and her family last night to catch up. Food and conversation is a good way to spend an evening. Currently toying with the idea of dying my hair to cover up blasted grays (urgh!).

Now back at work-- 5:30 came too early, as usual. Must get back to actually doing my job and check in on hyperchild who will just want to check his Myspace page.

Lost Boys

I'm feeling pretty blue right now. Today I had meetings for 4 of my kids that have missed an excess of days at school this year. Three of them got dropped from our roles. All three I have worked with for a little more than 3 years. Two of which were seniors. It makes me very sad, and very frustrated. I can't help it--even though they were bad asses, and even though they deserve to be dropped based on their choices this year, they were still my little (or not so little) bad asses. And it makes me depressed to see so many kids get to their senior year and then mess up--every year I have one who tries to sabotage their graduation. I'm trying to hope that one will be back with us--hopefully his mom will call PG and beg on his behalf. The kids make me mad, but I've never lost a senior before, and I'm very attached to the two this year. They make me mad, because they have so much potential if they could only see it and take ownership of their actions.

Bark at the Moon

It's amazing how much the lunar cycle affects kids-- the theory is always true: the days when there is the most aggression, and craziness is inevitably around the full moon.

My energy is still extremely low--the illness has progressed from blowing my nose all day to coughing all night. I was going to take it easy at work, however another social worker was sick so I ended up seeing some of her kids who had crises going on. S and I are going to get our tree up tonight, but I'm not doing anything more than that. Curling up in bed on a cold night is such a nice way to spend the evening. Especially with a dog curled up on your feet.

Well, it's officially December tomorrow.
--A Charlie Brown Christmas is able to put me in the holiday spirit every year.
--Where does one buy empty mason jars (i.e. canning jars)?!?! (Frustrated after several trips to
various stores came up empty)
--It's nice to know little girls still like glitter, especially glitter that you can wear.
--Getting Christmas decorations out of the storage closet is like doing a very difficult 3D puzzle.
--5 total strands of lights: 2 work fine, 3 half the lights light up, the other half is dead.
--Christmas lights and baking cookies can put anyone in a better mood.
--Even though I'm in the Christmas mood (or starting to get there), I'm still not ready for Christmas
music played 24/7 on the radio.
--Various shopping trips are in my future.
--Thank god for wish lists!

This is bad. I have fallen asleep 3 times this morning at work, and I have 5 hours left. I have tried walking around, caffeine, and splashing water on my face but I cannot seem to shake this tired feeling. It's definitely time for vacation...just have to make it through the day without getting caught by bosses sleeping. (Damn the rather large window into my office!)

I thought exercise, eating well, and getting enough sleep was supposed to help eliminate mornings like these! Urgh...jsadkasdkjf;lfdn;gsfk;gnd (head collapsing on keyboard).

Weekends are wonderful, friends are better.

Friday night--went to see Casino Royale, the new Bond film, with elizabifJ, and SEP. Loved it.
Saturday morning--grocery shopping, laundry, cooking pies and preparing for Sunday, BB (S's friend) came over and hung out.
Saturday evening--met family for S's birthday dinner and celebration with my family.
Sunday--finished prepping and cooking T-giving food, enjoyed having a crowded rec room full of people hanging out, watching football, playing Guitar Hero II, and eating a pre-Thanksgiving fare. Visited briefly with SD and OP from high school. I hadn't seen OP for 10 years? Probably a little less--maybe 6 or so... Still, awesome to see her and hear about her life. Definitely will think of doing something similar next year.

Today's goals: Meet with all the students and finish notes for the sessions, go home, finish cleaning up, go to gym and work off some of the food from yesterday, watch Heroes in bed. Hopefully walk 10,000 steps today-- we'll see. First day I've tried wearing a pedometer. Not sure if it is working correctly.

I heart Christine Lavin

Friday I discovered that Christine Lavin was playing at the Birchmere on Saturday evening, and bought myself a ticket, so excited that there were tickets left. Nicole joined me for the concert, and we had an awesome time--the show was great, lots of anti-Bush sentiment in the audience, and just a lot of laughing. It was almost like going to a comedy show. Afterwards, I got to meet her and she signed a CD of mine! Yay! Felt like a dope and didn't really say much but was excited to be able to meet her and her husband. Also, her opening band was "The Lascivious Biddies." I really enjoyed them (they had a piano player and a cello player that on Sunday was playing at Carnegie Hall--the music was amazingly good) and they really suited Christine Lavin's style--very funny sense of humor in their lyrics. One of their promotional items they were selling was pink underwear that said "Get Lucky" on the butt--the name of their latest album. I regret not getting the glow-in-the-dark knitting needles Christine Lavin was selling. Please check these artists out if you don't know them--they are so much fun.

Although that was the highlight of my weekend, I also had a lot of fun visiting Aleisha and James and the babies for lunch on Sunday, and then going to leahshep's house for dinner with SEP, STS, leahshep and the dogs.Yay for Steelers and Seahawks. Don't talk to me about the Redskins. (So glad lunch forced me not to watch the game).
